A Little About Us

ALEXANDER QUARRY is the first quarry to operate in Alexander County, since the quarry at the now landmark Rocky Face Mountain was closed nearly 80 years ago. We are located in the historic emerald mining village of Hiddenite, made famous in the 1870's by Thomas Edison who sent N.J. Scientist William Hidden here to find a source of  platinum-a companion mineral to emerald- to use in the first light bulb filaments he was inventing.

North American Emerald Mines, Inc., in the process of production emerald mining discovered that when the saphrolite (iron rich red dirt) layer was removed, the granite deposits beneath turned out to be high-quality, very desirable aggregate. Thus, ALEXANDER QUARRY has evolved into a much needed quarry to serve  Alexander County and the surrounding counties of Iredell, Wilkes, Catawba and Caldwell.
